The Department of Sports Science point at its history with a little hint: On the initiative of the student council, a collection of sportswear with the historical number 46 on each item of clothing has been designed. In the year 1946, the “Pedagogic Academy” was founded and with its formation, it was possible to study Sports Science in Wuppertal. Out of it grew the Department of Sports Science as part of the Faculty of Educational and Social Sciences of the University of Wuppertal (FB G) as it exists today.

On the one hand, the Department of Sports Science is responsible for the study and teaching of 900 students. On the other hand the Sports Science Department is involved in different research fields including top class sports (e.g. performance analysis), leisure activities (e.g. with studies about local/communal sports development) or Physical Education and School Sports (e.g. “Quality in Physical Education”).

The Department of Sports Science consists of four main reseach areas each with one professorship (Motor Control – Prof. Dr. Jürgen Freiwald; Sports Medicine – Prof. Dr. Dr. Thomas Hilberg; Sport Pedagogy – Prof. Dr. Eckart Balz; Sport Sociology – Prof. Dr. Horst Hübner). The academic staff also consists of eight permanent staff members (Dr. Tim Bindel, Wilhelm Brodbeck, Ute Derks, Michael Fahlenbock, Dr. Judith Frohn, Torsten Kleine, PD Dr. Theo Stemper, Dr. Peter Wastl). Further, graduate assistants and student assistants as well as the main secretary of the department (Renate Mankel) belong to the Department of Sports Science as well. For more than thirty years, the Department of Sports Science is linked with the Institution of University Sports.
